NEVADA – The Washoe County Health District has announced its plans to initiate the aerial mosquito abatement program, utilizing helicopters, starting in late June or early July.

This season’s abatement efforts experienced a delay due to the retirement of the county’s contracted company, which announced its closure in February.

To continue providing effective mosquito treatment, the Washoe County Health District is actively seeking a new vendor. Further details regarding the selection and treatment process will be disclosed once the vendor is finalized.

Kevin Dick, District Health Officer in Washoe County, acknowledged the community’s anticipation of aerial treatments in areas with high mosquito activity, such as the North Valleys, Spanish Springs, the Damonte Ranch area, and Washoe Lake. He expressed regret for the delay caused by circumstances beyond their control but assured residents that the crucial public health service would be carried out as soon as possible. In the meantime, he urged residents to remain vigilant in mosquito prevention to mitigate the risk of West Nile virus (WNV) in the community.

According to the Health District, current data indicates that mosquito numbers have been relatively low to average this year, thanks to the presence of rainfall, flowing water, and moderate temperatures.
