Washoe Tribe Receives $1.3 Million for Clean Energy and Infrastructure Upgrades

NEVADA – The Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California is set to receive a significant boost in funding, amounting to $1.3 million, aimed at enhancing clean energy initiatives and fortifying critical infrastructure. The funding originates from the Department of Energy’s Grid Resilience State and Tribal Formula Grants program, which is a vital component of the 2021 Infrastructure Law.

With the challenges posed by aging equipment, wildfire risks, and increasingly unpredictable weather patterns, the Washoe Tribe recognizes the pivotal role that their electrical grid and infrastructure play in maintaining community resilience. Serrell Smokey, Chairman of the Washoe Tribe, emphasized, “Aging equipment, wildfires, and extreme weather are a constant threat to our communities. This award, along with the partnerships of local utility companies, will ensure we are meeting the needs of Washoe People.”

The financial infusion is allocated to serve several crucial objectives. One of the primary focuses is to facilitate equitable access to affordable and clean energy resources for all tribal members. Moreover, the funds will contribute to safeguarding community facilities from the adverse impacts of severe weather events.

Additionally, a significant portion of the grant will be dedicated to the modernization of grid infrastructure, reflecting the tribe’s commitment to embracing innovative technologies. This investment in grid modernization aligns with the broader objective of transitioning towards cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.

As the Washoe Tribe looks ahead, this substantial funding injection not only enhances their energy resilience but also underscores their dedication to pursuing environmentally conscious solutions that benefit both their community and the region at large.
