Today, Republican Assemblyman Richard McArthur (AD-4) announced his campaign for Senate District 18, an open Senate seat vacated by Scott Hammond who termed out this year. In 2012, McArthur lost his senate bid in the Republican primary to Hammond, but regained his Assembly seat in 2016. His announcement reveals he enters the race with the endorsement of State Controller Andy Matthews.

The Nevada Policy Research Institute considers him one of the most conservative members of the Assembly and he holds a 90 percent rating from the American Conservative Union–conservative bonafides that may play to his advantage in a +2 Republican district. A Democratic challenger has yet to announce their candidacy in the district.

McArthur has served the Assembly since 2008 after serving 25 years as a special agent for the FBI and is a veteran of the Air Force during the Vietnam war. McArthur has established name ID in Assembly district 4 which comprises half of State Senate District 18 and has served in five legislative sessions and five special sessions.

“During my time in the Assembly, I always served with one goal in mind: to make sure Nevada is a great place to live, work, play, raise a family, and feel safe. I hope to deliver that same vision to the good people of State Senate District 18,” McArthur said in a statement.
