In reflecting on the state of education in Washoe County, it’s hard not to draw parallels to the repetitive cycle depicted in the comedy classic, Groundhog Day. Year after year, we awaken to the disheartening reality of stagnant school rankings and declining scores. Despite our best efforts, progress seems elusive, and the prospect of improvement feels distant.

Consider this sobering statistic: just eight years ago, 62 percent of our high school students were proficient in math. Today, that figure has plummeted to a mere 22 percent. It’s a troubling trend that cannot be ignored. We must acknowledge the urgency of the situation and collectively commit to addressing the root causes of this decline.

While it’s tempting to cast blame or indulge in finger-pointing, now is not the time for divisive rhetoric. Instead, let us approach this challenge with a spirit of collaboration and a shared commitment to our children’s future. As a candidate for Washoe County School Board Trustee in District E, I come to the table with a deep-seated concern for the well-being of our students and a genuine desire to effect positive change.

Drawing upon my personal journey as the first in my family to obtain a college degree and my professional background in human resources, I understand the transformative power of education and the importance of nurturing a supportive learning environment. With your support, I am confident that we can chart a fresh course for our schools, one that prioritizes academic excellence and equips our students with the skills they need to succeed in an ever-changing world.

As we approach the upcoming primary election on June 11, I urge you to join me in embracing a vision of unity and progress. Together, let us work to break free from the cycle of stagnation and build a brighter future for Washoe County’s children.
