A Las Vegas personal injury lawyer will spend time in jail for taking nearly $2 million from clients’ settlement cash.
According to court documents, Matthew Dunkley was sentenced to four to ten years in a Nevada jail on Monday in Clark County District Court, with credit for time served.
Dunkley pled guilty to three counts of theft in May after initially facing nine counts of theft and exploitation of an elderly person.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department stated in a statement that detectives began investigating Dunkley in 2018 after receiving accusations from customers that he stole money settlements they were meant to get from a case.
Clients also alleged that he stole money from insurance companies that was intended to cover medical costs, and they were being held accountable, according to authorities.
Dunkley allegedly stole $1.8 million in total from clients, according to detectives.
The charges were also submitted to the State Bar, which petitioned to have his license suspended.
Dunkley’s disbarment was imposed by the Nevada Supreme Court in 2020.
The decision adds, “He admits that he could not successfully defend against a disciplinary complaint.”
