As many Americans grow weary of unchecked illegal immigration and the federal government’s inconsistent enforcement of border laws, a new grocery store catering primarily to Hispanic customers opened in Las Vegas this week, raising both economic opportunities and important questions about national policy.

Superior Grocers, a California-based supermarket chain, launched its 74th location on South Decatur Boulevard, marking only the second store of its kind in the Silver State. While the store brings jobs and consumer choice to the area, its timing is striking, coinciding with heightened Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) crackdowns nationwide. These enforcement actions, intended to uphold federal law, have already shuttered businesses such as Broadacres Marketplace in North Las Vegas.

Despite these developments, Superior Grocers’ leadership appeared largely unconcerned. Vice President of Operations Miguel Alarco insisted that ICE activity in Nevada hasn’t impacted their operations, claiming that the store’s “diversity” offers insulation. While that may be true for now, it ignores the broader concern among law-abiding citizens who believe the rule of law must be applied equally, whether at the border or in the aisles of a grocery store.

Some customers echoed this sentiment. One shopper, Elizabeth Mercha, dismissed fears over immigration enforcement, noting she is here legally and urging others to “get your papers in order” to avoid future problems. Her statement reflects the views of many Americans who support legal immigration but expect adherence to our laws. Another shopper, Joaquin Avila, admitted to slight concern but assumed ICE wouldn’t target a business that serves as a “source of income.” This assumption, however, raises an important question: Should economic utility exempt any business or person from law enforcement?

The opening also came with charitable gestures, as Superior Grocers presented checks to local schools. While generous, such contributions shouldn’t obscure the larger conversation—how do we reconcile community development with respect for immigration laws? As the store plans further expansion in Las Vegas, it remains to be seen whether community leaders and federal agencies will remain on the same page.

When enforcement fades into background noise and selective accountability becomes the norm, law-abiding citizens are left to wonder who these rules are really for—and who’s actually following them.
