LAS VEGAS, Nev. (702 Times, NV Globe) – In January, Clark County authorities are calling for volunteers to assist count the homeless population in Southern Nevada.

The census will take place on Thursday, January 26, 2023, and will count all unsheltered persons suffering homelessness in the Las Vegas Valley.

Volunteers will be requested to perform a four-hour shift, arriving at various locations around the valley at 5 a.m.

During their shift, volunteers will be allocated to groups that will walk or drive to specific regions to count people who are not in a shelter and complete brief surveys of everyone willing to be questioned.

Census organizers are looking for more than 600 volunteers, and virtual training sessions will take place one week before the count.

The Homeless Census in 2022 discovered 5,645 persons living in shelters or on the streets and projected that approximately 14,000 people experienced homelessness in Southern Nevada at some time during the year.

The homeless census is a requirement for funding worth more than $15 million per year to local groups that offer homeless services and activities.
