Las Vegas, NV – On Sunday, November 10th, 2024, the Las Vegas Search and Rescue (SAR) team responded to a distress call from Oak Creek Canyon in Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

A climber had fallen while leading the “Marijuana” route. During the fall, the climber’s gear failed, causing them to hit their head and lose consciousness for approximately 20 minutes.

SAR personnel, utilizing the AIR1 helicopter, were able to reach the injured climber and provide immediate medical attention quickly. The climber and their climbing partner were then airlifted to a nearby BLM Fire Station helipad and subsequently transported to a local hospital for further treatment.

The incident serves as a reminder of the inherent risks involved in climbing, even for experienced climbers. It is essential always to prioritize safety and to be prepared for unforeseen circumstances.
