Hughes was suffering chest issues while playing flag football, a family member said FOX5. The girl fainted when she was taking a rest on the sidelines.
Hughes’s family informed FOX5 that he has recurring cardiac issues and that they were seeing a cardiologist about them. Hughes’ family said that despite a doctor’s approval to participate in sports, they planned to remove Hughes from such activities in order to assess her health.
The district’s Crisis Response Team will be on call for anybody who might want their assistance, according to the letter.
Later on Friday morning, Dr. Jesus Jara, the superintendent of the CCSD, released a statement on the student’s passing:
CCSD didn’t immediately respond to a request for more information on the details of the incident and what steps are taken before athletic events to ensure the safety of student-athletes.
A GoFundMe campaign has been created to help Hughes’ family.
