During Flag Football Game in Las Vegas 16-Year-Old Student Had “Medical Emergency” and Passed Away

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (702 Times, NV Globe) – The head of the high school said that a pupil passed away following a “medical issue” during a sporting event on Thursday night.

Desert Oasis High School Principal Ian Salzman wrote a letter to parents on Friday morning, “With profound regret, I write to notify you of the unfortunate demise of one of our students.”

In his letter, Salzman claimed that on Thursday night, the “suffered a medical emergency during an athletic event.”

According to the letter, “employees immediately started offering medical treatment and maintained doing so until paramedics came.”

“I must tell you with sorrowful heart that the pupil passed away. The death of this young life is mourned by the school and the whole district, according to Salzman.

Ashari Hughes, a student, was recognized by the Clark County Coroner’s office as being 16 years old. As of Friday morning, her cause and manner of death were still under investigation.

Hughes was suffering chest issues while playing flag football, a family member said FOX5. The girl fainted when she was taking a rest on the sidelines.

Hughes’s family informed FOX5 that he has recurring cardiac issues and that they were seeing a cardiologist about them. Hughes’ family said that despite a doctor’s approval to participate in sports, they planned to remove Hughes from such activities in order to assess her health.

The district’s Crisis Response Team will be on call for anybody who might want their assistance, according to the letter.

Later on Friday morning, Dr. Jesus Jara, the superintendent of the CCSD, released a statement on the student’s passing:

CCSD didn’t immediately respond to a request for more information on the details of the incident and what steps are taken before athletic events to ensure the safety of student-athletes.
