LAS VEGAS – After years of legal proceedings, the families of the victims who lost their lives during the 1 October shooting in Las Vegas will finally receive payouts from the shooter’s million-dollar estate. The estate of Stephen Paddock, the man responsible for the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history, has been liquidated, with his property sold and nearly 50 of his guns destroyed or taken out of circulation by the FBI.
During an estate hearing on Thursday, a probate attorney announced that the proceeds from selling Paddock’s assets, which amount to roughly $1.2 million, will be distributed to 61 families. The attorney, Alice Denton, worked on the case pro bono and revealed that each family will receive just under $20,000. The checks are expected to be mailed out in the coming weeks.
The payout comes as a small relief to the families who lost their loved ones during the tragic event that occurred in October 2017. The shooting, which took place at the Route 91 Harvest Festival, left 58 people dead and hundreds injured. Paddock, who was 64 years old at the time, opened fire from his hotel room at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, targeting the festival-goers below.
It has been reported that Paddock’s mother, who was listed as the sole beneficiary of his estate, relinquished her right to the money, allowing it to be distributed to the victims’ families. While no amount of money can bring back the loved ones lost during that fateful night, the payout serves as a small gesture of support for those who continue to grieve their loss.
