A father and son residing in Reno, Nevada, have been arrested and charged with harboring illegal aliens for financial gain. According to the Department of Justice, from July 2021 to March 11, 2025, 43-year-old Carlos Recinos-Valdez and his 20-year-old son, Kevin Recinos-Ruano, allegedly conspired to smuggle and harbor illegal immigrants, exploiting them for profit.
Authorities report that Recinos-Valdez orchestrated the smuggling operations through a transnational criminal organization, collaborating with human smugglers across Guatemala, Mexico, and the United States. The immigrants were housed in various apartment complexes in the Reno area, owned or managed by Recinos-Valdez. The smuggling network reportedly charged each individual thousands of dollars for entry into the U.S., with Recinos-Valdez demanding additional payments upon their arrival in Reno. Victims faced threats of physical violence if they failed to comply with payment demands. Recinos-Ruano is accused of assisting in collecting these payments and acting as an enforcer.
During a search of their residence, law enforcement discovered firearms, fraudulent documents, and other incriminating evidence. Recinos-Valdez faces charges including conspiracy to harbor aliens, harboring illegal aliens, and aiding and abetting attempted interference with commerce by extortion, carrying a potential maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. Recinos-Ruano is charged with conspiracy to harbor illegal aliens, with a possible maximum sentence of 10 years.
This case underscores the critical importance of securing our borders and enforcing immigration laws to protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation and uphold the integrity of our nation’s legal system.
