Las Vegas, NV – A former second-grade teacher in Las Vegas has been sentenced to nine years in federal prison for distributing images and videos of child sexual abuse. Alexander Scott Derringer, 38, pleaded guilty to one count of child pornography distribution and received his sentence in a U.S. District Court on Monday.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Nevada, Derringer used two accounts on the mobile app Kik to share over 130 files of child sexual abuse material over several months in 2021. Investigators discovered approximately 59 of those files on two of Derringer’s cellphones, which also contained a staggering 2,584 images and 269 videos depicting the sexual abuse of children, some as young as infants.
The investigation began when the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received tips about an individual using an IP address linked to Derringer’s home to upload and share the illicit material. Henderson Police arrested Derringer in 2022. Although he admitted to using Kik to communicate with others, he denied viewing or possessing child pornography, according to the arrest report.
Derringer’s teaching career spanned from 2015 to 2021 at Farron Elementary School. He had recently started a new position at Coral Academy of Science Las Vegas, where he worked for only eight days before his arrest and subsequent termination.
“Mr. Derringer abused his position of public trust to prey on those we expected him to protect,” said Spencer L. Evans, special agent in charge for the FBI Las Vegas Division. Evans emphasized the gravity of child pornography offenses, stating, “Every time child pornography is viewed on the internet, it re-victimizes a child.”
In addition to his prison sentence, Derringer will be subject to 20 years of supervised release following his incarceration. This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat child exploitation and the commitment of law enforcement agencies to protect children from abuse.
