A fatal accident occurred on Sunday afternoon in the Spring Mountains National Recreational Area near Mount Charleston. The Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) reported that around 2:20 p.m., a silver 2012 Jeep Wrangler and a silver 2022 GMC Sierra pickup were both traveling eastbound on Lee Canyon Road near mile marker 7.
The incident unfolded when the driver of the Jeep attempted to pass the GMC. Simultaneously, the GMC’s driver crossed the center line, attempting to overtake a Toyota pickup, and entered the westbound lane directly into the Jeep’s path. To avoid a collision, the Jeep’s driver, identified as 23-year-old Las Vegas resident Joshua Gilbert-Amado Hernandez, steered left onto the shoulder. Unfortunately, he overcorrected to the right, causing the Jeep to overturn and ejecting Hernandez, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Disturbingly, the driver of the GMC did not remain at the scene and is currently being sought by authorities. This incident marks the 13th fatality investigated by NHP’s Southern Command this year.
This tragic event underscores the critical importance of responsible driving and adherence to traffic laws. Reckless maneuvers not only endanger the lives of those involved but also strain community resources and impact public safety. As the investigation continues, authorities urge anyone with information to contact the Nevada Highway Patrol.
