LAS VEGAS, Nev. (702 Times, NV Globe) – A fatal vehicle accident that killed 2-year-old Rose and 3-year-old Taylor Wilmer is throwing new light on car seat safety for young children.
While North Las Vegas police believe the incident was likely caused by drunk driving and speeding, they believe both children were put at greater risk since they were not properly belted in.
According to the executive director of Baby’s Bounty, a non-profit that offers clothing and equipment for newborns, many parents are using the incorrect car seat for their children.
According to the CDC, using the proper seat decreases the chance of injuries in an accident by 82 percent.
Baby’s Bounty gives free car seats as well as instructions on how to properly install them. According to the group, there are a variety of reasons why some youngsters aren’t securely belted up.
“Sometimes they just don’t know what is appropriate, the right size, and sometimes they are just struggling in poverty and have the means to buy one, car seats went up 41 percent since Covid, so we know that inflation increasingly becomes a barrier for folks to provide for their infants,” said Kelly Maxwell of Baby’s Bounty.
