Authorities in New York confirmed that a gunman from Las Vegas opened fire inside a Manhattan high-rise on Monday, killing four individuals—including an off-duty NYPD officer—before taking his own life.
The suspected shooter was identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura. According to officials, Tamura held a concealed carry permit issued by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Identification was found on his body at the scene, including the Nevada-issued permit. Public records show Tamura had previously been arrested on a trespassing charge in 2023, which was later dismissed. His background includes minor traffic violations.
The incident occurred at 354 Park Avenue around 6:28 p.m. local time, prompting an immediate police response. Surveillance footage showed Tamura exiting a black BMW with what appeared to be an M4-style rifle before entering the building. Upon entering the lobby, he allegedly shot an off-duty police officer, a woman taking cover, a security guard at a nearby desk, and another individual.
Security footage later captured Tamura allowing an elevator passenger to exit unharmed before he ascended to the 33rd floor. Once there, he reportedly continued firing, fatally striking another individual before ending his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Among the victims was Officer Didarul Islam, a member of the NYPD and an immigrant from Bangladesh. The incident remains under investigation.
