LAS VEGAS – A Las Vegas mother is currently in custody with a bail set at $20,000 following her arrest on Thursday for child abuse. Authorities allege that she allowed her 17-month-old child to ingest fentanyl-laced painkillers.
Regena Coyle, 39, made her initial court appearance on Friday, facing charges of felony child abuse.
According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Coyle admitted that her toddler consumed two to three “unsecured blue pills” that she described as fentanyl-laced Percocet.
The child soon became unresponsive, prompting Coyle to search online for Narcan, an opioid overdose reversal medication.
Instead of immediately seeking emergency help, Coyle drove past Sunrise Hospital on her way to acquire Narcan.
Approximately an hour later, LVMPD received a distress call reporting that the child was not breathing. Officers performed CPR and administered Narcan at the scene.
In the police report, it is stated that Coyle acknowledged her child’s tendency to explore and claimed that the pills were not prescribed to her. The toddler was rushed to Sunrise Hospital for medical treatment.
During questioning, Coyle confessed to knowingly purchasing the fentanyl-laced pills because they were more difficult to crush compared to non-fentanyl ones. She admitted to consuming five or six of these pills per day, financed through borrowed money from relatives. Coyle usually stored them in her car or purse.
