Las Vegas police have arrested three individuals – Christian Scarlett (31), Savannah Schmitt (31), and Stephen Smith (45) – on charges related to the kidnapping and extortion of a 15-year-old boy.
According to court documents obtained by 8 News Now Investigators, the incident began on Saturday, May 25th, when the group allegedly kidnapped the teenager from a convenience store parking lot in the west valley. Witnesses reported seeing the group confront a group of young people, with one witness stating a weapon was threatened. The 15-year-old was then held against his will for six hours at a nearby apartment.
Concerned witnesses alerted police who, along with tips from previous domestic disturbance calls involving Schmitt, were able to locate the apartment and rescue the teenager.
The suspects face a multitude of charges, including kidnapping with a deadly weapon, extortion, child abuse, robbery, and conspiracy to commit kidnapping. All three maintain their innocence, with Smith claiming the teenager stole an e-bike during a planned sale and Schmitt denying any wrongdoing. The teenager, however, alleges threats were made and a pillowcase placed over his head during his captivity.
Judge Amy Ferreira set bail for each suspect at $150,000 with strict conditions, including GPS monitoring and barring them from possessing weapons.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers young people can face. It’s crucial to emphasize open communication with parents or guardians and avoiding potentially risky situations.
