LAS VEGAS, Nev. (702 Times, NV Globe) – A court gave a man who killed a security guard for a downtown hotel by pushing him to the ground a minimum jail term of 28 months.
“He took away a father. He took away a brother. He took away a son. He took away a grandfather and he took away my husband,” Randy Lyons’ wife, Elizabeth MacDowell, told the court before Judge Jacqueline Bluth issued her sentence.
According to a September investigation by the 8 News Now Investigators, Pedro Lizano, 35, was charged with murder in the killing of the Lyons. For an accusation of involuntary manslaughter, Lizano accepted a plea agreement in October.
According to a police report, on September 26, 2021, Lyons was a security guard at the El Cortez Hotel and Casino on Fremont Street when he was called to a restaurant for a report of a man causing a disturbance.
In the hotel’s valet area, Lyons later discovered the individual who was allegedly causing the disturbance, later identified as Lizano, according to the police.
In the footage, Lyons can be seen approaching Lizano, who is sitting on a bench and smoking a cigarette. Then Lizano stands up from the bench and moves quickly towards Lyons’ direction.
According to the authorities, Lizano “forcefully and angrily shoved” him, forcing him to tumble backward. According to authorities, Lyons’ head struck the concrete, rendering him unconscious and resulting in bleeding.
Following the occurrence of a second brain bleed in February, MacDowell claimed she had to make the agonizing choice to remove her husband from life support. Homicide was deemed to be the cause of Lyons’ death. The accusations against Lizano were changed from battery to open murder by the prosecution. Due to Lyons’ advanced age, the fee was increased.
“Even when he could no longer open his eyes, he forced himself to lift his head off the pillow in a desperate attempt to say goodbye to us,” Lyons’ brother, Mitchell Lyons, said.
“This is all the physical I have left of my brother, Randy,” Lyons’ sister, Brenda Lyons, told the court, holding up a necklace containing her brother’s ashes. “Pedro Lizano has no regard for my brother’s life or safety.”
Police in Las Vegas Metro have detained Lizano 49 times since 2008, according to data. Records indicated that 10 citations were issued to Lizano by the police.
“I was homeless, and I was cold, and I needed somewhere to stay,” Lizano told the court.
“The root cause is that he has a mental illness that he’s been unable to treat and that we as a society have been unable to give him the resources to treat,” Westbrook said.
