LAS VEGAS – According to the Mesquite Police Department, a Las Vegas couple assaulted a police officer in a Walmart after examining a recovered wallet containing crystal methamphetamine.
A Mesquite police officer was summoned to a Walmart on Jan. 2 about 9:30 p.m. to investigate a recovered wallet that contained crystal meth, according to authorities. Renee Horvath, 49, of Las Vegas, was eventually recognized as the owner of the wallet and the meth.
Renee resisted arrest when the cop attempted to apprehend her. According to MPD, her husband, James Horvath, 51, of Las Vegas, began yelling at the officer as she continued to fight arrest. A nearby couple jumped in to assist by physically separating James from the cop.
James was able to break free from spectators and tackle the police off of Renee. The male onlooker immediately leapt on James, yanking him away from the officer and preventing any additional attacks.
Renne tried to strike the officer again, but a female bystander grabbed her and stopped her, according to police.
According to authorities, the officer used his taser to stop James while bystanders stopped Renee.
Renee is charged with the following:
- Resisting a police officer
- Obstruction
- Felony battery on a protected person
- Felony possession of illegal drugs
- Felony possession of an ID with the intent to defraud
- Felony obtaining and using personal identifying information of another
James is facing charges of resisting arrest, obstruction, and felony battery on a protected person.
The Mesquite Police Department commended the bystanders for their brave actions in assisting the officer and invited the pair to its annual police banquet.
“No amount of training or equipment can prepare our officers for every situation, especially when they are outnumbered. There are rare instances that we need the public to physically step in and help us. When those dire circumstances occur, we are even more grateful. I always say how supportive our wonderful city is. Community members Anthony and Cassie Gill are a perfect representation of the support we have,” Chief MaQuade Chesley stated. “I personally reached out to the Gill family to thank them and invite them to our annual police banquet where they will be honored for their courageous actions.”
