LAS VEGAS, Nev. (702 Times, NV Globe) – The Las Vegas Desert Dogs are getting ready to bring lacrosse to the valley.
During the district’s recent staff development day, the team collaborated with CCSD’s Team Engagement unit to showcase lacrosse to over 200 gym instructors at Rancho High School on Tuesday.
The initiative launches off a new pilot program that will incorporate the sport into the physical education curriculum, which will begin later this month at select elementary and middle schools.
As part of their first-ever school equipment giving initiative, the team will also gift over 500 sticks to schools around the region.
The initiative, according to Desert Dogs, strives to make the game more accessible to Las Vegas youngsters by providing a chance for elementary and middle school-aged pupils to get exposure to the sport.
Erik Turner, Desert Dogs defenseman and 2022 National Lacrosse League Champion, was in attendance and conducted the workshop, teaching guests the fundamentals of the game such as passing, catching, shooting, and ground balls.
P.E. Teachers also learned about the sport’s history and background, including its Native American beginnings, as well as the laws and regulations of various types of lacrosse and the Desert Dogs organization.
The team’s debut training camp will run through the first week of December, with their first-ever game scheduled to take place on the road at Panther City in Fort Worth, Texas, on Friday, December 9.
The Desert Dogs will next play in front of their home audience for the first time on Friday, December 16, at the Michelob ULTRA Arena.
