Second Case of Tuberculosis This Week Identified at Southern Nevada School

A letter was sent to the families of Barry and June Gunderson Middle School that an individual at the school was diagnosed with active pulmonary tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a bacterial disease spread through close, repeated contact by breathing the same air over a period of time, according to the letter. It is not transmitted through touching or objects.

The Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) is working with the Clark County School District (CCSD) to address student and staff health concerns. A testing plan is created for identified close contacts, with notifications starting as early as Thursday.

Free TB testing will be offered at Barry and June Gunderson Middle School on the following dates:

  • Monday, April 15 (7 am – 6 pm)
  • Wednesday, April 17 (7 am – 6 pm)
  • Monday, April 29 (7 am – 6 pm)

A second round of testing will be offered on May 7th, 8th, and 9th from 7 am to 6 pm.

Parents or guardians must be present for testing. Testing conducted outside the designated window may require retesting.

The letter advises those not feeling well to contact their healthcare provider or SNHD for guidance.

For questions or concerns, contact SNHD at (702) 759-1015 (Monday-Friday, 8 am – 4:30 pm).

This is the second case of tuberculosis identified in a Southern Nevada school this week. SNHD is also investigating a positive TB case at Cambiero Elementary School, where close contacts have been notified.
