LAS VEGAS – Holiday purchasing normally begins in November, but many people are still out shopping, and the Retail Association of Nevada predicts an 8% rise in holiday spending this year.
Many shop owners, such as Teana Barbour, who owns “With Love and Company” in downtown Summerlin, a health and wellness boutique that sells natural items, have prepared for the holiday rush.
“We arrive extremely early in the morning since we make everything here. We arrive around six o’clock and leave around three o’clock, and we work around the clock, making the baskets, “Barbour explained.
Despite rising prices and inflation, Barbour claims that many consumers are flocking to small companies and shopping locally.
“We definitely see a change in that people are a bit more cautious with their money, and we have a lot of clients who are saying this year we’re going to give a little more good energy,” Barbour said. “We sold 300 pounds of healing balm and 400 pounds of magnesium balm this past weekend.”
The same is true for SkinBar in Henderson, where consumers may purchase makeup and skincare services.
Lynda Moore, the store’s owner, said they’ve been booked with appointments and are doing a lot of online sales, so she’ll keep the holiday promos and deals going long after Christmas.
“We’re swamped with orders, and I’m constantly racing to the post office because we have so many individuals from out of state or who have moved out of state who still want their moisturizer or cleanser that they can’t find in Alabama,” Moore explained.
Moore believes that this time of year is critical for many mom-and-pop shops because not only are people buying unique Christmas gifts for loved ones, but every dollar spent helps local retailers grow.
“I felt like there was a lot of rivalry with Black Friday online and with Amazon,” Moore continued. “I feel like we’re getting busier lately with last-minute gifts. I had the impression that we started slowly and are now quite busy.”
