Las Vegas, Nevada – Three lives were tragically cut short Saturday in a wrong-way crash on US 95 near Elkhorn. Among them was 3-year-old Jaya Brooks, described by her parents as a vibrant spirit who touched everyone she met.
“Hug your babies tight,” said Jaya’s mother, Darea Swain, her voice heavy with grief. “Because there’s people out there, you just don’t know.”
Jaya’s father, Jan Brooks, recounted the harrowing experience. He was driving with Jaya around 3:20 p.m. when they encountered a vehicle speeding southbound in the northbound lanes. The wrong-way driver collided with another car before slamming into Brooks’ vehicle.
“I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh. What the heck,'” Brooks recalled. “Soon as I said that, I’m just spinning, literally, my car is just spinning around. I just remember spinning.”
Jaya sustained brain trauma in the crash and later succumbed to her injuries at Centennial Hospital on Monday.
“It’s just a senseless act,” Brooks said, his voice choked with emotion.
Jaya’s parents described her as a bright, inquisitive child who loved Disney princesses. She was eagerly anticipating a trip to Disneyland for her upcoming birthday in June, a trip her parents plan to take in her honor. Presents piled under the Christmas tree meant for Jaya will be donated to other children in need, a testament to her parents’ desire to keep her spirit alive.
The Nevada State Police have not officially confirmed Jaya’s death, but have identified two other victims: 63-year-old Karen Foote and 50-year-old Antonia Apton.
This devastating crash serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of driving with caution and awareness. Jaya’s story is a call for all of us to cherish our loved ones and appreciate the precious moments we share.
