Reno, Nevada – A man is now in custody facing a slew of serious charges, including attempted murder, in connection with a midtown Reno shooting that tragically claimed one life and left another individual severely injured.
Philip Cortez, the suspect in this harrowing case, was apprehended more than a month after the incident, which took place in August. His charges include attempted murder with a deadly weapon, battery with a deadly weapon, robbery with a deadly weapon, mayhem with a deadly weapon, and possession of a controlled substance.
The incident unfolded on August 11, prompting a swift response from officers with the Reno Police Department. They were dispatched to the area of South Virginia and Arroyo streets following reports of a fight that had escalated into a violent confrontation with multiple gunshots fired.
Upon their arrival at the scene, officers encountered a grim sight. They discovered one individual suffering from gunshot wounds. Simultaneously, two other victims with gunshot wounds had taken it upon themselves to seek medical attention and had driven to a nearby hospital.
As the investigation progressed, law enforcement officials pieced together the events leading up to the tragic shooting. It was determined that two groups had become embroiled in a dispute that had escalated into a violent exchange of gunfire.
Crucially, the investigation revealed that Philip Cortez was directly involved in the robbery and attempted murder.
The Reno Police Department has asserted that this incident appears to be an isolated altercation between the two groups involved. Consequently, they have emphasized that there is no perceived threat to the safety of the public at large.
