Sparks, NV – The City of Sparks is deeply saddened to announce the passing of former Mayor Geno Martini. Mayor Ed Lawson expressed heartfelt condolences and gratitude for Martini’s significant contributions to the community.
Mayor Lawson stated, “We greatly appreciate Mayor Martini for the amazing and valuable work he did over the years. But more importantly, all of us here at the City loved and respected the man who could bring a smile to anyone’s face. Mayor Martini appreciated, loved, and respected City staff, and the feeling was mutual. To me personally, he was a mentor who always gave me encouragement and perspective.”
In 2018, the City organized a farewell retirement event to honor Mayor Martini, attended by City employees and officials from the region. Mayor Lawson emphasized the profound impact Martini had on the City and extended condolences to his family. “We will miss him terribly, and our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Ruth, and daughter Gina and her family.”
Council member Donald Abbott expressed his grief on social media, paying tribute to Martini as “a living legend, mentor, and a dear friend.”
Geno Martini-Gonzales, Martini’s daughter, confirmed his passing on Facebook, expressing relief that her father has found peace after a challenging period. She extended gratitude to those who visited in his final days.
Born and raised in Sparks, Martini began his political career in 1999, filling a council seat left vacant by Mayor Tony Armstrong. Following Mayor Armstrong’s passing, Martini was elected to assume the role and went on to become the longest-serving mayor in Sparks’ history, holding the position for a record-breaking 13 and a half years. Martini stepped down in 2018 to focus on his health after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
Martini’s leadership left an indelible mark on the community, spearheading transformative projects such as the Sparks Marina, which transformed a former gravel pit into a cherished recreational area. He also played a pivotal role in bringing the Legends Outlet Mall to the region. In recognition of his lasting impact, the City named a road after him.
Former Mayor Geno Martini was 77 years old. His legacy of leadership and dedication to the Sparks community will be remembered and cherished.
