NEVADA – Reno radio is losing a voice that many people know and like. Dan Mason is leaving KOH News Talk 780.
Mason’s career has been going on for almost 49 years. It all started with a weekend job at a station near his home in Michigan. In the years after that, he worked as a DJ at rock and country stations. He has been the program director at KOH in Reno for the past 28 years, and for the last eleven, he has been the host of the Dan Mason Show, a news and talk show on the afternoon drive.
Dan says that his business has changed a lot, mostly because of new technology, but the core of the job hasn’t changed.
“At my first job in radio, there was a cardboard cutout in the corner of the studio that said ‘Talk to Me!’ I thought that was very helpful because it taught me right away that communication is one-on-one. I always think of someone riding alone in a car, and then I just try to talk to them. That’s a great piece of advice that I picked up right from the start.
Mason says he wants to fully embrace the idea of “retirement.” To start, he has promised his wife a long-planned cruise through Alaska.
