RENO, Nev. (775 Times, NV Globe) – A nearby warming center is in need of volunteers due to the extremely low temps we’ve been seeing.
Five different churches serve as warming places during Night Off the Streets. They have been absorbing excess workload from other nearby Carson City locations.
About 40 to 45 persons every night, according to Night Off the Streets volunteers, are seen.
The active warming center has been the Carson Presbyterian Church throughout the month of December; following the new year, they will relocate to the Methodist Church for one month.
According to church members, four homeless persons allegedly died from frostbite in 2016 due to the severe winter weather, which prompted them to keep the churches’ doors open for the last 6 years to avoid the worst-case scenario.
In comparison to previous year, there has been a 31% rise in the number of women seeking refuge in warming centers.
According to reports, those at the facilities are currently on average around 50 years old. “Are we going home now?” is what they ask when we pick them up from the bus, according to Craig LaGier, President & Founding Director of Night Off the Streets Inc. It’s a time and place for them to come together, and we seldom ever have any conflicts or problems.”
There are specific times they must leave the area because the Warming Centers are housed in churches.
Doors open at 9 o’clock. then by 6:30 a.m. everyone must depart.
In addition, the church offers them hot beverages, sleeping bags, and a place to crash for the night. Even though they claim this treatment is beneficial, it just serves as a temporary fix.
The three-step procedure, according to LaGier, is to “survive get them off the street, to stabilize get them to the correct social services get them into a hotel or an apartment, and to thrive and be on their own.”
They need more volunteers because the mobile center is being utilized by so many people. The following link has further information.
