Northern Nevada Medical Center Will Open a 50-Bed Mental Health Hospital in Reno Next Year

Northern Nevada Medical Center plans to turn an assisted living facility into a 50-bed behavioral health hospital next year, becoming Reno’s newest mental health hospital.

A northwest Reno assisted living home will soon be turned into a Northern Nevada Medical Center mental health hospital.

RENO, Nev. – The NNMC Northwest Extended Care facility will be located in northwest Reno on the north side of Sharlands Ave., east of Robb Dr. Acute rehab and long-term acute care beds will also be available.

The facility is expected to be acquired by NNMC in 30-45 days and reopened 6-9 months later.

“That need for behavioral health beds comes up in almost every meeting we’re at,” NNMC chief operating officer Philip Reber said.  “When there was an opportunity for us to find something the first service that came to mind of what we could put into that building was behavioral health.”

Last Monday, Reno city council members unanimously authorized a zone change to make way for the facility.

“We need to be making mental health a top priority in this city regardless of what it takes,” Mayor Hillary Schieve said.

The new institution will help to ease the significant scarcity of mental health care in northern Nevada, which will be exacerbated by the December 2021 closing of West Hills Behavioral Health Hospital.

According to Reber, West Hills was owned by the same parent business as Northern Nevada Medical Center, making it simple for the parent firm to absorb the licenses and reopen at a new location.
