NV Energy Prepares for Another Winter Storm

NEVADA – While NV Energy continues to restore power to less than 1,000 of the 71,000 customers affected by the New Year’s Eve storm, the company is also preparing for the next winter storm wave, which is expected to bring more wind and heavy snow to Lake Tahoe and western Nevada on Wednesday and throughout the weekend.

According to company officials, in response to last weekend’s storm and in preparation for the coming winter storms, NV Energy has pulled in and positioned additional lineman resources from throughout Nevada, Oregon, and Utah to respond as effectively as possible to any repercussions of the coming storm.

“These additional crews, when combined with our existing NV Energy teams, more than triple the strength of our outage response and help ensure we have every resource available to minimize the number and duration of outages that may result from the upcoming winter storm,” said Doug Cannon, President and CEO of NV Energy.

NV Energy is also providing the following services to customers who have been without power since January 1:

NV Energy is proactively calling each remaining customer who is without power as a result of the New Year’s Eve storm to ensure that they have adequate accommodations.
Green Cross clients (those who require active use of medical equipment at home) are being prioritized for restoration, and NV Energy is ensuring that these customers have adequate arrangements.

NV Energy is collaborating with local governments to assist customers who are unable to water their cattle due to a power outage.
The NV Energy Foundation has already given the American Red Cross of Northern Nevada a $10,000 contribution to aid in their reaction to the storm.

“We understand that these prolonged outages have caused significant stress for thousands of our customers, and it is our goal to ensure they have access to vital services in order to remain safe,” Cannon added.

NV Energy also encourages consumers to be prepared for anticipated winter weather and potential disruptions by providing the following advice:

  • Use drip faucets to limit the possibility of a pipe burst.
  • Always keep flashlights and batteries on hand. Candles are dangerous because they can catch fire.
  • Charge cell phones and laptop computers.
  • Have non-perishable goods, medicine, baby supplies, and pet food on hand, as well as one gallon of water per person each day.
  • Never use a generator inside a house or garage. In well-ventilated places, use gas-powered generators.
  • Consider all downed electrical wires to be live and potentially harmful. If you see one, stay away and report it to 911 and NV Energy.
