NEVADA – In a joint effort to assist residents facing financial hardships, the City of Sparks and the Reno Housing Authority are teaming up to offer rental assistance through the allocation of $3 million. This funding is made available under Assembly Bill 396, which targets elderly individuals, persons with disabilities, and those dealing with unforeseen emergencies.
The City of Sparks has received $1.5 million for the fiscal year 2023/24, with another $1.5 million anticipated for the following fiscal year under this legislation.
Two vital programs have been initiated to aid those in need: the Eviction Prevention Rental Assistance Program and the Senior Short-Term Rental Assistance Program.
The Eviction Prevention Rental Assistance Program is designed to support households on the brink of eviction due to financial crises or unexpected emergencies. These funds, provided on a first-come, first-served basis, will be granted to eligible Sparks households. Assistance may cover overdue rent, including late fees, and future rent, with a cap of three months’ total assistance.
The Senior Short-Term Rental Assistance Program offers senior citizens aged 62 or older a monthly allowance of up to $500 for six months if they are struggling to pay rent due to increases or financial hardships.
Eligibility for rental assistance requires households to meet the following criteria:
1. Earn an income at or below 80% of the current United States Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Income Limits for Washoe County.
2. Be a tenant in the City of Sparks with a current and active lease.
3. Demonstrate financial hardship or emergency.
To apply for either the Eviction Prevention Rental Assistance Program or the Senior Short-Term Rental Assistance Program, please contact the City of Sparks at (775) 353-1648 or coshousing@cityofsparks.us.
