Markleeville, CA – In response to the recent winter storms and Atmospheric River events, Alpine County Unified Command has opened a warming shelter at the Behavioral Health Services building located at 40 Diamond Valley Road in Markleeville. Lunch services will also be provided to Alpine County residents from 12 PM to 1 PM through Friday, March 17.
Due to the local state of emergency declared by Alpine County on Sunday, March 12, all commission and committee meetings have been canceled through Friday, March 17, 2023, out of an abundance of caution. Additionally, the Administration Building will be closed on Tuesday, March 14th, and Wednesday, March 15th to ensure the safety of residents.
An Atmospheric River is forecasted for the Alpine County region starting Tuesday, March 14th, and will continue until Wednesday, March 15th. As a result, residents are advised to limit travel significantly due to possible road closures and public safety access issues. The County will be providing sandbags and sand at Station 91 and Station 92 in the Markleeville and Woodfords areas to prevent access issues.
Alpine County also encourages residents to secure supplies that will allow them to be self-sufficient for multiple days in case of service interruption or road closures. The supplies include food, water, medication, propane, firewood, pet food, batteries, fuel, generators, and charged cell phones.
Residents are advised to clear as much snow as possible around tailpipes, exhaust vents, propane tanks, drainages, and roofs to prevent any threats to their personal safety. It is also recommended to assess roof snow loads prior to the rain event to minimize risks.
For more information on sandbags, please contact Community Development at 530-694-2140. Stay safe and stay prepared, Alpine County!
