Today, Republican David Brog announced his candidacy for Assembly District 37, looking to unseat Democratic incumbent Shea Backus in the 2024 election.

Brog announced: “Nevadans deserve common sense leaders who refuse to promote extreme ideologies. But Shea Backus and her colleagues in Carson City voted time after time for radical measures that have increased our crime rate, our prices and our tax burden. We need advocates who will work with Governor Lombardo to solve the problems facing our state rather than creating them. Together, we will restore common sense to Carson City.”

Backus held her seat by only 800 votes, wining 50.49% of the votes in an evenly split district. According to the 2020 Census, the district is evenly split between Democrats, Republicans and Independents.

Brog has established name ID in the district. In 2022, Brog placed second out of eight candidates in the Republican primary for Nevada’s 1st congressional district.

During his run in the 2022 primary, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee labeled Brog as “a conservative activist, far-right conspiracy theorist, and radical abortion ban proponent.” We can safely assume the Democrats will recycle this rhetoric, as abortion, once again, will be used as a wedge issue.

Brog is a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School, the president of the Edmund Burke Foundation, and the Nevada Co-Chair of Term Limits USA, and runs the Macabees Task Force which combats the delegitimization of Israel on college campuses and beyond. Before joining the Maccabees, Brog was the executive director of Christians United for Israel from its founding in 2006 until 2015.

Brog also worked in the United States Senate where he was chief of staff to Senator Arlen Specter and staff director of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Democrats are only one seat short in the state senate to override a gubernatorial veto as they hold a one seat supermajority in the assembly. AD37 could be a pick up for the Nevada GOP as Republicans are focused on holding the Senate in 2024 and flipping assembly seats to restore balance and representation in the legislature.
