A judge set bail at $50,000 for Markeisha Chanpale Foster, one of two suspects accused in the death of Reba, an English Bulldog who was found in a taped plastic tote in a dumpster this past July. The incident has sparked widespread public outrage and a massive community response, including tens of thousands of dollars in donations to bring those responsible to justice.
A suspect accused of placing a bulldog in a plastic tote over the summer is now being held without bail following a court appearance on Monday.
Reba was discovered on July 26 in a dumpster outside a Von’s supermarket near East Twain Avenue and South Maryland Parkway. According to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police, the dog was still alive but in severe distress. Despite emergency care at a local animal hospital, she passed away two days later.
Court Appearance and Conditions
Foster, who has an extensive criminal history including 15 misdemeanors and 14 prior failures to appear in court, is prohibited from having contact with animals while the case is ongoing. Judge Amy Ferreira also ordered random animal control checks at her residence and placed her on electronic surveillance.
Her co-defendant, Isaac Laushaul Jr., was also charged with felony animal cruelty but refused to attend his Sunday court hearing. Both suspects are scheduled to appear in court Monday morning.
Public Outcry and Rewards
The case has drawn significant attention from the Las Vegas community. John Waudby, who runs the “Justice for Reba” website, expressed feelings of relief and joy upon learning of the arrests.
“I was nauseated, appalled, sickened that somebody could do this to a living creature,” Waudby said, describing the community’s dedication to seeking justice.
In addition to a $25,000 reward offered in late July, another $50,000 reward was later contributed by Big Dog Ranch Rescue and a private donor, demonstrating the widespread determination to hold those responsible accountable.
Metro Sgt. William Gethoefer also appealed to the public in August, asking for tips to help solve the case.
The Community’s Role in Justice
The arrests of Foster and Laushaul Jr. are a significant step forward in the pursuit of justice for Reba. Advocates hope the case will raise awareness about animal cruelty and inspire further protections for vulnerable animals.
