Cat Death Sparks Nationwide Recall: Bird Flu Found in Raw Pet Food
By TheNevadaGlobeStaff, December 27, 2024 10:24 am
A disturbing case of bird flu contamination has led to the recall of a raw pet food product sold across the United States and Canada. Northwest Naturals, an Oregon-based company, is pulling its two-pound Feline Turkey Recipe raw frozen pet food after it was linked to the death of a cat in Washington County, Oregon. Genetic testing confirmed the cat contracted the H5N1 avian influenza virus from the tainted product.
The affected product, packaged in blue-and-gold bags marked “Protein Boost,” carries “Best if used by” dates of 05/21/26 B10 and 06/23/2026 B1. Sold in California and 11 other states—including Arizona, Florida, and Michigan—the product was also marketed as suitable for dogs. Consumers are urged to immediately dispose of the pet food and request a refund from the place of purchase.
This recall highlights critical issues surrounding pet food safety and supply chain oversight. With previous recalls involving Northwest Naturals, including a 2018 incident related to listeria contamination, one must ask: Are enough measures in place to ensure the safety of pet products in the market? The safety of our pets and the broader implications of animal-to-human virus transmission demand scrutiny.
California, already facing 37 confirmed human cases of bird flu as of Monday, declared a state of emergency on December 18 to strengthen its response to the outbreak. State health officials continue to assure the public that the risk of contracting bird flu remains low, with no evidence of human-to-human transmission.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the interconnectedness of public health, agriculture, and consumer safety. As the avian influenza virus affects not only farm animals but also enters the household through contaminated products, the question remains: How can regulatory systems better protect both animals and humans from such risks?
Customers with questions or concerns about the recall can contact Northwest Naturals at 866-637-1872 or by email at infonw-naturals.net, Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
