LAS VEGAS, NV – Some parents in Clark County, Nevada, report receiving threatening emails with their children’s personal information. The emails come nearly 10 days after the Clark County School District (CCSD) notified the public that it experienced a cyber hack.
According to one parent, Brandi Hecht, the email she received was sent at 2 a.m. on Wednesday and included an attachment with a personal profile on her three children that included photos, student identification numbers, and their home address.
Hecht said she is concerned about the safety of her children, given the rise of human trafficking and the fact that their personal information could be sold on the dark web.
The email did not come from a CCSD address, but it is associated with a school district near Fresno, California. We could not confirm the sender’s employment status by email.
A cybersecurity expert, Christopher Warner with GuidePoint Security, advises parents to create and get into a habit of changing passwords on a periodic basis.
There has been no word back from CCSD regarding the request for comment. All district employees and students are urged to update their passwords by Wednesday at 5 p.m.
What to do if you receive a threatening email with your child’s personal information:
- Do not open any attachments or click on any links in the email.
- Report the email to CCSD immediately.
- Change your child’s passwords for all online accounts.
- Monitor your child’s credit report for any suspicious activity.
- Be vigilant about any unusual activity or contact with your child.
