Clark County Owns Sam Boyd Stadium Again — But Can’t Touch It Without D.C.’s Approval

It’s official — Clark County now owns Sam Boyd Stadium again, after buying it back from UNLV and the Nevada System of Higher Education for $5 million. The deal, approved in January, didn’t officially close until the end of June, making the county the new legal owner of the 69-acre site.

This stadium, once a hub for UNLV football, high school championships, concerts, and major events, has been sitting idle for years. Built in 1971 with taxpayer investment, it was originally run by the county, later handed over to UNLV for free in 1985. Now taxpayers are footing the bill to buy it back — with no plan for what to do with it.

The real hitch? Federal strings. Because the land originally came from the Bureau of Land Management, the county can’t just decide its future. Under the original agreement, the land must be used for “public use,” and the BLM controls much of the surrounding area. Until the county works through the red tape with Washington, this prime piece of real estate sits fenced off, collecting dust instead of generating opportunity.

While Commissioner Jim Gibson says talks with BLM are ongoing, Nevadans are left wondering whether this will turn into another government-owned asset stuck in bureaucratic limbo. The possibilities are endless — upgrade it into a modern venue, repurpose the land for community use, or open it up for private development that could bring jobs and revenue. But until the county shakes loose of federal restrictions, taxpayers get nothing for their $5 million but an empty parking lot and the promise of “discussions.”

It’s a reminder that when government holds the keys, prime land can be trapped in paperwork instead of progress. If Nevada wants growth, it might be time to rethink who really makes the best steward — bureaucrats in D.C. or the people who live and work here.
