LAS VEGAS – The Clark County School District (CCSD) Board of Trustees has reached a $2 million settlement in a case involving allegations of child abuse by a teacher towards a student with disabilities.
The lawsuit was filed by Cortney Larson, who asserted that her non-verbal, autistic son sustained injuries while attending school. The incident occurred when the child was just three years old. Larson’s legal action was directed at CCSD, alleging negligence and misconduct in providing proper care for her child.
The allegations prompted investigations into the matter, involving Sandra Thompson Elementary School and the teacher in question, Melissa Olszewski. The school police conducted interviews as part of their inquiry. In an audio recording, Olszewski acknowledged certain actions, stating, “Yeah, I think that’s happening, might have, you know, I don’t remember flicking but I’d say tapping is what I do.”
This settlement follows a pattern of similar cases involving the CCSD Board of Trustees. In the current year alone, the board has approved multiple settlements amounting to millions of dollars. Notably, a $9 million settlement was granted in March to the family of a child who was assaulted by a school bus driver.
As investigations continue and cases are resolved, the board remains vigilant in maintaining a safe learning environment for all students.
