Clark County is facing a triple wave of respiratory illnesses as flu, COVID-19, and RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) activity continues to rise sharply, according to the Southern Nevada Health District. Officials are urging residents to take responsibility for their health and that of their communities by implementing proactive measures to curb the spread of these illnesses.

The numbers tell a sobering story: Since the flu season began in October, Clark County has recorded 438 influenza-related hospitalizations and seven deaths. This marks a significant increase from the same period last year, which saw 294 hospitalizations but a higher death toll of 13. Meanwhile, wastewater surveillance as of January 8 shows moderate COVID-19 activity and high levels of influenza A and RSV throughout the county.

While challenges mount, the tools to combat these threats are readily available. Health officials are emphasizing three key steps:

•Get vaccinated: Safe and effective vaccines are available for flu, COVID-19, and RSV, with eligibility expanding for some groups. Vaccines remain the cornerstone of protecting yourself and reducing community spread.

•Practice hygiene: Frequent handwashing with soap and water is critical. If unavailable, hand sanitizers serve as a good backup. This simple act significantly cuts the transmission risk for all three illnesses.

•Seek timely treatment: For those at higher risk, treatments for flu and COVID-19 are effective in reducing hospitalization and preventing severe outcomes. Acting quickly when symptoms arise can make all the difference.

This surge is not just a public health issue; it’s a wake-up call for personal responsibility. With vaccination and hygiene, we can all play a role in ensuring our healthcare systems aren’t overwhelmed and that the vulnerable among us are protected.
