E-Scooter Incidents Prompt Calls for Regulation Instead of Parental Accountability

Nevada lawmakers are now considering additional regulations on e-scooters and e-bikes after a string of high-profile accidents, with several Democratic legislators openly calling for new limits on speed and expanded government oversight. Assemblymember Tracy Brown-May urged the governor to intervene and suggested speed caps for minors — a move critics say would place yet another layer of regulation on families rather than focusing on parental responsibility and enforcement of laws already on the books.
Assemblymember Reuben D’Silva — whose own district recently experienced a fatal e-scooter incident — argued that counties and cities should be compelled to adopt their own rules, similar to state-imposed school cell phone policies passed last session. Senator Rochelle Nguyen likewise supported new rules, calling for more data and “accountability,” though the proposals would inevitably shift more authority to government instead of reinforcing personal responsibility and basic enforcement.
All three lawmakers pushing for more regulation are Democrats. No Republican lawmakers provided comment, and Governor Joe Lombardo — a Republican — would ultimately be the one deciding whether to call a special session and whether tightening laws is the right response, or whether better enforcement of existing laws is enough.
