Nevada Senator Catherine Cortez Masto is leading the charge to expand reproductive rights for women throughout the valley. In a recent roundtable discussion, Senator Cortez Masto met with advocates and healthcare providers to address the critical issue of contraceptive access.
With the recent FDA approval of over-the-counter birth control, many are rallying behind the cause to make birth control more accessible without the need for a prescription. During the roundtable, advocates highlighted the financial barriers that many Nevadans encounter when trying to afford contraceptives. They also took the opportunity to empower women by educating them about their rights in this crucial area of healthcare.
Senator Cortez Masto emphasized the importance of safeguarding women’s reproductive freedom in the face of potential challenges. She commented, “The goal here is to make sure we are continuing to provide these services, educating folks but also being aware of what’s coming down. The pike from other far-right extreme Republicans that want to further restrict women’s access to reproductive freedom.”
Additionally, Senator Cortez Masto drew attention to legislation she introduced earlier in May. The Freedom to Travel for Health Care Act aims to secure legal protections for women who travel across state lines to seek reproductive care. The legislation also calls upon the Federal Trade Commission to play a role in safeguarding the rights of women seeking this vital healthcare.
The roundtable discussions mark a significant step forward in the ongoing efforts to expand and protect women’s reproductive rights in Nevada. As advocates and lawmakers collaborate, the goal is to ensure that all women have access to the necessary resources and support for their reproductive health.
