Henderson, NV – This week, the Henderson City Council approved a pilot program allowing private trappers to trap, neuter, and release (TNR) stray cats, marking a significant step forward in managing the city’s growing stray cat population.
The initiative, championed by the advocacy group Henderson Cats, has been spearheaded by Arvie Bromley, who has been actively implementing TNR programs across the Las Vegas Valley. Bromley expressed gratitude for the council’s decision, stating, “It’s been my mission to advocate for this program, and I’m glad the city is finally on board.”
Program Details
Starting January 1, the city will launch a one-year pilot program. Volunteers from Henderson Cats will trap stray cats and take them to Heaven Can Wait Animal Society for sterilization. Each surgery costs $60, funded entirely through donations and private contributions.
The goal of the TNR program is to reduce the stray cat population and prevent the growth of cat colonies, which often consist of both feral and domestic cats. Bromley emphasized the importance of early intervention, saying, “If we don’t address this now, these colonies will continue to multiply. It’s a crisis.”
Community Impact
Bromley noted that Henderson residents have already started reaching out with concerns about stray cats in their neighborhoods. She anticipates an influx of calls once the program officially begins.
Bromley highlighted the importance of community involvement, stating, “We encourage people to feed them, not breed them,” while visiting a cat colony near Sunset and Eastern.
How to Help
The success of the TNR program relies on community support. Those interested in volunteering or donating can contact Arvie Bromley at rvbrom@gmail.com to contribute to the initiative.
With this pilot program, Henderson aims to address its stray cat population in a humane and effective manner, setting a positive precedent for other cities in the valley.
