Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) has arrested Manuel Mendoza Jr. (29) for allegedly hitting a pedestrian and fleeing the scene in April. The incident resulted in the death of the pedestrian, Robert Bager.
According to the arrest report, Mendoza admitted to detectives that he struck Bager while driving his Chrysler Sebring on April 20th near North Main Street and Foremaster Avenue. However, he denied deliberately burning the car, which was discovered near Henderson hours later.
The investigation revealed a disturbing pattern. Video footage captured moments before the crash and showed Mendoza speeding in the Chrysler. Additionally, chipped paint from the car, further video evidence, car parts found at the scene, and witness statements aided investigators in identifying the vehicle.
An arson investigator then connected the burned car to Mendoza. Despite admitting to hitting Bager, Mendoza claims he panicked and fled the scene. He denies any involvement in burning the vehicle.
Mendoza was apprehended at a Las Vegas Justice Court hearing for an unrelated robbery case last week. He currently faces charges of felony failure to stop at the scene of a crash and destroying or concealing evidence. He is being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in court on June 12th.
This tragic case highlights the dangers of reckless driving and the importance of remaining at the scene of an accident to render aid and cooperate with authorities.
