A Las Vegas man accused of driving under the influence of drugs before a fatal crash that killed an elderly woman on a scooter has been taken into custody, according to Las Vegas police.

Authorities said 33-year-old Brian Thomas was arrested in connection with the July 9 collision that left a 77-year-old woman dead near the intersection of Nellis Boulevard and Cedar Avenue. Investigators allege that Thomas had taken methamphetamine and marijuana prior to the crash.

The crash occurred shortly before 10 p.m. when Thomas, riding a motorcycle northbound on Nellis, struck the woman who was crossing the street on a motorized scooter. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police reported that Thomas sustained minor injuries in the crash. Toxicology results later confirmed the presence of narcotics in his system, leading to his arrest on charges of DUI resulting in death and reckless driving.

According to investigators, speed and impairment were major contributing factors. The case remains under review by the Clark County District Attorney’s Office.
