Light Up Your Home, Not the Highway: Nevada Police Warn Against Holiday Lights on Vehicles
By TheNevadaGlobeStaff, December 20, 2024 8:49 am
As the holiday season brings colorful displays and festive cheer, Nevada State Police are reminding drivers that decorating their vehicles with holiday lights is not only unsafe but also against the law. While the enthusiasm for spreading holiday spirit is appreciated, attaching decorative lights to cars can mimic emergency vehicles, creating confusion and potential hazards for other drivers on the road.
Nevada Revised Statutes (NRS) 484D.145 strictly regulate vehicle lighting to prioritize safety. Under the law, motorists are prohibited from adding non-compliant lighting, including Christmas decorations, as these do not meet the state’s requirements for proper color, placement, or function. Additionally, NRS 484D.100 and 484D.110 mandate that vehicles must have two working headlamps and other functional lighting to ensure safe operation—decorative lights are neither a legal nor a safe substitute.
In their statement, Nevada State Police emphasized the importance of avoiding distractions on the road, saying, “Drivers are encouraged to spread cheer in ways that don’t involve adding distracting or non-compliant lighting to their vehicles. Light up your home, not the highway, because a traffic ticket doesn’t make a great stocking stuffer!”
Holiday safety on Nevada’s roads is a collective responsibility. While creativity is encouraged during the season, ensuring compliance with traffic laws and maintaining focus while driving remains paramount.
