LVMPD Drone Technology Credited with Quick Recovery of Missing Child

LAS VEGAS — In a highlight of local police success this weekend, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Internal Oversight and Constitutional Policing Bureau successfully used drone technology to locate a missing child on Saturday evening. The 7-year-old boy had wandered away from a family gathering in a residential neighborhood on the city’s east side.

With ground units hindered by heavy Saturday night traffic, the LVMPD deployed a thermal-imaging drone to scan a large, unlit desert lot adjacent to the neighborhood. Within 15 minutes of takeoff, the drone operator identified a heat signature matching the child’s profile. Officers were guided directly to the boy, who was found unharmed and reunited with his family shortly before midnight.

This deployment marks a growing trend in the LVMPD’s use of aerial tech for search-and-rescue operations. While some privacy advocates have raised concerns about drone usage during recent protests, department officials emphasized that the technology is a “critical, life-saving tool” in high-stakes missing persons cases.
