A corrections officer with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department was taken into custody Wednesday on multiple felony and misdemeanor charges. Gevaughn Murphy, 29, was booked into the Clark County Detention Center—the same facility where he has been assigned since joining the department in 2023. According to official department releases, Murphy faces four felony counts of coercion with the threat or use of physical force, one felony count of child abuse or neglect, and four misdemeanor counts of domestic battery.
In response to the arrest, the department has announced that Murphy will be placed on a suspension of police powers without pay while an internal investigation is conducted. Murphy was assigned to the north tower bureau of the detention services division prior to these allegations. He made his initial court appearance Thursday morning to address the charges. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department stated that they are continuing to cooperate with the ongoing investigation into the matter, and no further details regarding the specific nature of the incidents have been released at this time.
