LAS VEGAS – On Saturday morning, people from a central Las Vegas neighborhood got together to show their support for the family of a 20-year-old mother who was stabbed to death this week.
Makayla Adams’s family was one of about 30 people who went to a vigil and balloon release at the Marble Manor Community Center.
“She was a wonderful mother. The woman’s mother, Monica Miner, said, “She was a new mom whose baby was only 8 months old. She loved her daughter to death, literally.”
Makayla Adams’s family found her dead Tuesday night. She had been stabbed in the middle. Police said they found her at home with her 8-month-old daughter Amoura in the 800 block of Reed Place, near North Martin Luther King Boulevard and West Bonanza Road.
Her mother told her that Adams’ last thing was to keep Amoura safe.
Monica Miner said, “She gave her life so that her daughter could live.”
Michael Ricks, the ex-boyfriend of Makayla Adams, was arrested in San Diego on Wednesday. He is being charged with murder, burglary with a deadly weapon, and abusing a child.
Officials with the Metropolitan Police Department say that the two had a fight Tuesday night and that Ricks stabbed Makayla Adams during the fight and then ran away to San Diego.
Miner said, “I know from all of this that Makayla would want someone in her situation to hear her story and learn from it.” “Ask for help if you are in a situation of domestic violence and don’t know how to get out. Makayla didn’t ask for help until much later, and when she did, she always went back. Don’t go back; that’s the worst thing you could do.”
Monica Miner said that her daughter had left Ricks two months ago.
