Nevada DMV Offers Temporary Waiver for Drivers Who Fail Smog Tests

The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles announced that drivers who fail their vehicle emissions test may now qualify for a waiver while completing necessary repairs.
The new waiver aims to help residents who are working toward compliance but cannot immediately pass the state-required smog inspection. DMV officials said drivers who demonstrate that they’ve made a good-faith effort to fix emissions-related issues may receive temporary clearance to register their vehicles.
Under the waiver, applicants must show receipts or documentation proving that emissions repairs have been initiated or scheduled with a certified technician. The DMV will review each case individually to determine eligibility.
The waiver does not exempt vehicles from meeting emissions standards altogether; rather, it allows additional time to complete repairs and testing while maintaining legal registration. Officials emphasized that the goal is to balance air quality regulations with flexibility for drivers facing costly or time-consuming repairs.
For more information, residents can visit the Nevada DMV website or contact their local office for assistance.
