New TSA Policy Adds Fee for Passengers Lacking Real ID or Approved Credentials

Beginning February 1, travelers arriving at airport security checkpoints without a Real ID or another acceptable form of identification will be required to pay a $45 fee to the Transportation Security Administration.

The fee applies to passengers who do not present a Real ID-compliant credential or an alternative approved form of identification when passing through TSA screening. According to the agency, the charge is intended to offset the cost of additional identity verification procedures that must be conducted when travelers arrive without proper documentation.

Federal Real ID requirements have been in effect since May 7, 2023, mandating that travelers use a Real ID or another approved credential for certain federal purposes, including domestic air travel. A standard driver’s license alone no longer meets federal identification standards at airport checkpoints.

While obtaining a Real ID is optional and not required for driving, it can simplify air travel for individuals who do not have a passport or other accepted identification. Real IDs can be identified by a star or similar marking in the upper-right corner of the card.

TSA officials said the new fee shifts the cost of identity verification from taxpayers to individuals who arrive at checkpoints without proper identification. Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles representatives noted that the Real ID program has been in development for decades and that the state has made repeated efforts to inform residents of the requirements.

In addition to a Real ID, travelers may present other acceptable forms of identification, including a U.S. passport or passport card, a DHS Trusted Traveler card, a military ID, an enhanced driver’s license, or a federal or state-issued photo ID that meets Real ID standards.

Children traveling with parents on domestic flights are not required to present identification. Minors traveling alone are encouraged to carry some form of ID, though a Real ID is not required.

TSA advises travelers who do not have acceptable identification to arrive at the airport earlier than usual, as the identity verification process may take 15 minutes or longer. Passengers who anticipate needing verification can pay the fee online in advance through the TSA website to reduce delays.

Real IDs remain available through the Nevada DMV by appointment, though officials report a backlog of approximately one month. The cost of a Real ID in Nevada is about $41.
